Workshop Description:

This program will provide participants with an in-depth examination of compelling ethical challenges in social work.  Moving beyond introductory ethics concepts, Dr. Frederic Reamer will explore difficult ethics cases and practical strategies designed to protect clients, practitioners, and agencies.  The presentation will address conflicting professional duties and discuss practical steps that professionals can take to manage ethical issues skillfully.  Key topics will include boundary issues, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, clients’ rights, termination of services, and impaired professionals.  Dr. Reamer will focus especially on novel and emerging ethical challenges associated with social workers' and clients' increasing use of technology, e.g., delivering services remotely using technology, communicating with clients on social networking sites, managing access to electronic records, conducting online searches.   The presentation will include discussion of new ethical standards and practice standards in social work, statutes, regulations, and case law.  Dr. Reamer will focus especially on complex documentation issues.  He will make extensive use of case material and provide ample opportunity for audience participation.

At the conclusion of this presentation participants should be able to:

  • Identify challenging ethical issues and dilemmas in social work
  • Apply practical ethical decision-making frameworks and protocols
  • Identify ethical issues that pose malpractice and liability risks
  • Design strategies to protect clients and practitioners
