Too Deep to Hurt:  Understanding & Treating the Self-Injurer Techniques

Presented by Nigel Darvell, ACSW, LCSW, CAC

6.0 Clock Hours

This workshop will address the challenges of working with the individual who self-injures, usually referred to as “cutters’. This workshop will explore reasons why people engage in self-inflicted violence, the clinical profile of a self-injurer. Behavioral interventions and self-directed analysis will be featured along with strategies and treatment goals.  This workshop will explore whether self-injury is pathological syndrome or rebellious behavior. This workshop will also provide the clinician with what is involved in completing a risk assessment and how to perform an analysis of self-harm questionnaire with the client. The impulse control model will be examined and strategies and treatments will be discussed. What treatment providers need to know will also be addressed along with methods for the self-injurer that can be helpful or harmful.  Treatment goals and treatment planning will also be explored in this workshop.
