Understanding Anxiety Disorders:  How to Define,  Diagnose, and Treat

Presented by Terri Cooley Bennett, LCSW, LSCSW, CCDP-D

6.0 Clock Hours

According to the book, “Managing Your Anxiety”, by McCullough and Mann (1994),  “Anxiety refers to that troubled state in which we find ourselves looking forward to an uncertain event with apprehension and fear.”). In a 1993 study (Narrow, Regier, Rae, Marderscheid, and Locke, 1993), Anxiety Disorders was the most prevalent group of mental disorders in the United States.  Research conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health has found that anxiety disorders is the number one mental health problem among American women. The DSM-5, clinical definition of anxiety will be examined as well as comparisons to Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders.  In the DSM-5, Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders is a new category and former anxiety classified diagnoses were moved from the Anxiety Disorder category to the Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorder Category.   Four theories regarding the cause of anxiety will be examined:   the Psychodynamic Theory, the Behavioral Theory, the Biological Theory, and medical conditions. All Clinical Anxiety Disorders and related conditions will be reviewed, diagnosing will be discussed, clinical cases will be presented, and treatment methodologies will be reviewed, as well as sample relaxation exercises and techniques.
