This NASW-IA sponsored comprehensive 6-hour workshop addresses the most critical issues for the clinical supervisor in social work.

Key concepts to be covered include:

  • Responsibilities and models of supervision
  • Iowa regulatory requirements and the supervision plan
  • Parallel process and effectively evaluating and improving supervision
  • In addition, research examining at supervision will be explored

Through presentation, large group and small group discussions, the following aspects of supervision will be explored in this training:

  1. The purpose, role, and functions of supervision
  2. Theories and models of supervision
  3. Oversight and guidance of supervisees who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clientsI
  4. Individual supervision facilitation
  5. Parallel process and the importance of modeling strengths-based principles in supervision
  6. A review of literature regarding the practice of supervision in social work

Continuing Education
NASW-IA has determined that this program meets the criteria of the Iowa Board of Social Work for 6.0 hours of continuing education for Licensed Independent Social Workers.  This workshop has been designed to meet the requirements of the Iowa Board of Social Work for LISWs supervising LMSWs who are working to become clinical social workers. 


Presenter:Dr. Valerie Stokes

Dr. Stokes joined Northwestern College’s social work department in 2008 as the BSW program director after serving as executive director of The Bridge, a transitional housing agency in Orange City. She previously spent seven years as a therapist, including four years as co-director of student counseling services at Northwestern College. She also worked as a program supervisor at the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence and as a social worker at the Crittenton Center in Sioux City, Iowa. She was named the 2012 recipient of the Northwestern Teaching Excellence Award.  She has served on the NASW Iowa board of directors as the Vice-President. She earned a Ph.D. in Human Development & Educational Psychology at the University of South Dakota, and she is a (LISW) licensed independent social worker. She received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Northwestern College in 1993 and earned a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1997. She has supervised multiple supervisees who have successfully completed their Iowa supervision requirements. In addition, Dr. Stokes is the owner and private practice therapist for New Leaf Therapy, LLC (www.newleaftherapyservices.com) serving northwest Iowa with offices in Le Mars and Orange City.  Dr. Stokes is a clinical mental health therapist who specializes in trauma-informed therapy and attachment-based services for children, families and adults.
