Creating Safe Space:  Working with Gender and Sexual Diversities

Competency in working with members of the LGBTQ+ community is vital. Even with recent steps forward in rights, member of the LGBTQ+ community are still at higher risk for health and mental health issues. This workshop will help social workers become more familiar with terminology, risk factors, assessing for gender/sexual minority status, ethics of being a competent provider, and actions to take to improve social work practice.


Participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic understanding of relevant terms and terminology
  2. Identify risk factors across the life span for LGBTQ+ people
  3. Demonstrate basic understanding of different levels of influences facing LGBTQ+ people
  4. Determine when it is appropriate to assess for gender/sexual minority status
  5. Apply NASW Code of Ethics/ethical standards to working with LGBTQ+ people
  6. Identify specific goals to improving practice

Registration fees-NASW Members $125.00, Other Professional $165.00
