The NASW Code of Ethics and Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration

Presented by Terri Cooley Bennett, LCSW, LSCSW, CCDP-D
6.0 Clock Hours

This course meets the Ethics requirement for licensure renewal.

Social Workers are often key members of interdisciplinary teams. As part of the Interdisciplinary Team, a social worker has unique challenges regarding patient/client care, as well as a unique opportunity to intervene with clinical skills.  According to the NASW Code of Ethics (2017, National Association of Social Workers), “Social workers who are members of an interdisciplinary team should participate in and contribute to decisions that affect the well-being of clients by drawing on the perspectives, values, and experiences of the social work profession.”  Social Workers may find themselves in challenging situations, at times, when they are on a team and find that their social work perspective and value is in disagreement with other members on the team.  How should a social worker handle these situations?  What is best practice and what a social worker do in this situation in order to enhance collaboration?  This informative workshop will answer these questions and others regarding interdisciplinary teamwork.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be provided with an overview of the NASW Code of Ethics with particular attention given to codes that pertain to Interdisciplinary Teams and Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues
  2. Participants will discuss Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Teamwork and current research and trends will be reviewed
  3. Participants will consider potential Ethical Dilemmas that arise from being part of an Interdisciplinary Team and will bring their own dilemmas to be assessed by colleagues and the instructor
  4. Participants will review organizational problems that co-occur with ethical dilemmas
