Seeking Self-determination in Synchronicity

Presented by David Strabala, MSW, LCSW

6.0 Clock Hours

Self-determination is a core social work value. As the pace of change accelerates and old cultural scripts become deficient, how can we help our clients trust expanded images of themselves to make the changes or take the risks that might be in their best interest?

This workshop will look at self beyond the ego, through ideas or images of self and soul, which was associated with the Greek word for psyche. How do ancient people view fate and destiny?  Eastern practices of yoga and meditation are gaining traction in the West, but the mental framework connected with them, including oneness and non-causality, are more difficult to integrate in our life stories.  Exploring synchronicity could help. Although this term was coined by C.G. Jung, it is based on these Eastern principles. Many Westerners often misunderstand, denigrate or misuse this experience, but it is second-nature to others.

The presenter will show and discuss an award-winning 90-minute documentary, “What Is Synchronicity?”, that he directed. Emphasis will be placed on the role of story, dreams, intuition and learning to use sophistication in navigating one’s fate and destiny. Ancient fairy tales and myths will also be told, and with the use of a djembe drum, to gain insight into self-determination.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Identify the limits in how we imagine the self
  2. Describe the importance of self-determination
  3. Identify key elements of a story
  4. Define synchronicity and its relevance to self-determination
