Suicide Prevention

Presented by Dr. Gary Behrman, PhD, MSW, MDiv

3.0 Clock Hours

Meets 2.0 hour Suicide Prevention Training and Education Requirement for licensure and renewal of licensure.

For over a decade, the suicide rate in Missouri has been higher than the national rate. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults with suicides outnumbering homicides by more than two to one. With the increase in opiate addictions, it is critical that social workers are educated in how to assess, treat, and refer to appropriate levels of care to lower the risks for
suicide.

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the warning signs of suicide risk,
  2. Understand family concerns with at-risk patients,
  3. Incorporate behavioral health screens and safety plans,
  4. Apply best practices that facilitate resilience and improve health outcomes,
  5. Identify resources and recent research for suicide prevention.
