Interactive Dementia Training and Education for Professionals

Presented by Jan Hanneke, MSW, LMSW & Amy Sobrino, MSW

6.0 Clock Hours

This interactive workshop is led by Social Work and Occupational Therapy professionals from Memory Care Home Solutions. Memory Care Home Solutions is a not-for-profit organization which provides education, training and support to families dealing with dementia in an effort to reduce healthcare utilization, decrease caregiver stress, and improve function and quality of life for the individual with dementia.

This workshop consists of 6 hours of education and training to increase knowledge and improve clinical practice in working with individuals with dementia and their caregivers. The workshop will take place in a home-like environment specifically created by a geriatric design specialist for adults with dementia. This environment will be utilized during the training in numerous ways by providing opportunities for participants to identify the relationship between home environment and functional capacity; learn about home modifications that can increase safety and optimize functioning, and modify activities of daily living in ways that enhance functional capacity. In addition to activities relating directly to the home environment, participants will learn communication and behavior management strategies that will strengthen their clinical skills and help to improve practice with individuals and families dealing with dementia. The training relies on a participative approach to learning, in which trainees are encouraged to engage in structured activities and group discussions.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Describe the local and national need for non-pharmacological, community-based caregiver training programs
  2. Describe the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional impairments associated with dementia and their impact on independence, safety, healthcare utilization and caregiver stress
  3. Identify and discuss simple activities and environmental modifications that can help control or lessen common behavior problems and improve safety and function
  4. Identify and practice effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques that can enhance communication with people suffering from dementia
