This workshop has been designed to meet the requirements of the Iowa Board of Social Work for LISWs supervising LMSWs who are working to become clinical social workers.

This NASW-IA sponsored comprehensive 6-hour workshop addresses the most critical issues for the clinical supervisor in social work.

Key concepts to be covered include:

  • Responsibilities and models of supervision
  • Iowa regulatory requirements and the supervision plan
  • Parallel process and effectively evaluating and improving supervision
  • In addition, research examining at supervision will be explored

Through presentation, large group and small group discussions, the following aspects of supervision will be explored in this training:

  1. The purpose, role, and functions of supervision
  2. Theories and models of supervision
  3. Oversight and guidance of supervisees who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clients
  4. Individual supervision facilitation
  5. Parallel process and the importance of modeling strengths-based principles in supervision
  6. A review of literature regarding the practice of supervision in social work

Continuing Education
NASW-IA has determined that this program meets the criteria of the Iowa Board of Social Work for 6.0 hours of continuing education for Licensed Independent Social Workers.  This workshop has been designed to meet the requirements of the Iowa Board of Social Work for LISWs supervising LMSWs who are working to become clinical social workers. 


Presenter: Greg Nooney, MSW, ACSW, LISW

Greg Nooney earned a masters degree in social work (MSW) from Loyola University in Chicago in 1983, is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), and is licensed in the state of Iowa as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) and in the state of Hawaii as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Greg has worked in mental health for 36 years and has retired after ten years as director and therapist at Burgess Mental Health in Onawa Iowa. He served as Northwest Iowa Branch Chair of the NASW Board of Directors from 2014-2016. He is an adjunct instructor at the University of Iowa School of Social Work where he teaches a master’s level course on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. He is currently in private practice providing HEG neurofeedback in Sioux City and occasionally works as a traveling social worker in Maui, Hawaii. He has four adult children and will be celebrating his his 40th wedding anniversary next year.
