Course Goals and Objectives:

Following a brief review of Motivational Interviewing participants will learn and practice ways to elicit change talk as a method to increase the likelihood that clients (and their fellow Social Workers) make the changes they want for their lives. This will be a highly interactive practice/use-based workshop on Motivational Interviewing. This workshop is directly applicable to both Bachelor and Master level Social Workers and the concepts and techniques of Motivational Interviewing are applicable to micro and macro-level Social Work practice.


1. Review Motivational Interviewing

2. Identify Change Talk and Sustain Talk

3. Practice at least three ways to elicit change talk from people in the client role


About the Presenter: Tony Raymer, LISW, RPT-S

Tony Raymer, LISW, RPT-S is a Social Worker and Play Therapist.  He has been providing direct social work in Central Iowa since 2007, working primarily with individuals affected by mental illness and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.  Tony has utilized Motivational Interviewing in his clinical practice, as well as in supervision with Social Workers and other human service workers.  He participated in the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers Training of New Trainers in 2018.  Tony currently serves as the Director of Clinical and Community Services at Candeo, a mental health and disability services not-for-profit serving Polk County, and hosting today's workshop.


The NASW Iowa Chapter has determined that this event is worth 3.0 CEUs for Social Workers.
