Sarah Deer, JD

“Sovereignty of the Soul:

 

Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America”     

 

by Sarah Deer, JD

Professor of Law, Indian Law Program

 

Sarah Deer, JD (Muscogee (Creek) Nation) has worked to end violence against women for over 25 years and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2014.  Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of federal Indian law and victims' rights. Professor Deer is a co-author of four textbooks on tribal law. Her latest book is The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America, which has received several awards.  Her work on violence against Native women has received national recognition from the American Bar Association and the Department of Justice.  She currently teaches at the University of Kansas. Professor Deer is also the Chief Justice for the Prairie Island Indian Community Court of Appeals.

Joyce James, LMSW-AP is the CEO and President of Joyce James Consulting providing training, technical assistance, research, and evaluation services to child welfare, education, health, courts, juvenile, faith and community based organizations. She began her professional career as a Child Protective Services (CPS) caseworker and has established an impressive 36-year history in community organizing and in addressing racial inequities in health and human services systems. She has a powerful story of her journey from CPS caseworker to Assistant Commissioner of Texas CPS, to Associate Deputy Executive Commissioner of the Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities and the State Office of Minority Health. Ms. James is a nationally recognized expert on addressing racial inequities, and is credited with being the pioneer of efforts in Texas to eliminate institutional and structural racism in services to children and families in the child welfare system.

Sandra Bernabei, LCSW is a community organizer and a social worker in private practice in NYC. She is the past President of the National Association of Social Workers-New York City Chapter.  Sandra is a founding member of the Antiracist Alliance, an antiracist organizing collective of New York City area human service practitioners. ARA is building a movement to bring an analysis of structural racism as outlined by the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond to social work education and practice.  Over 12,000 educators and human services practitioners have participated in the undoing racism/community organizing workshops
