NASW-MN Half-Day Workshop

Pharmacological Update for Social Work

Erica Zielin-Wurm, APRN, PrairieCare

With today's limited healthcare resources, social workers, therapist, and counselors may find that effective and ethical practice requires greater knowledge of current psychopharmacological treatment interventions and effects, as they play a greater role in medication management.

This Workshop will review the different classes, mechanisms of action, side effects, and potential adverse reactions with a primary focus on recent developed or released drug options and clinical pearls with an emphasis on evidence-based treatments. Emerging evidence regarding individualized medicine, or group genopharmacology, will be discussed as it relates to each class. Classes of medications discussed will mainly focus on anti depressants, stimulants, mood stabilizers (anti-epileptics) and antipsychotics.
